My close friend D left Melbourne for good yesterday. It wasn't a long-winded goodbye, it wasn't sentimental. We just went to drop him off at the airport, said our farewell and he left.
I guess this drives home the point that we all eventually have to grow up and move on with our lives. If I could be childish, D, I wouldn't want to be friends with you in the beginning if I knew there was gonna be a goodbye. But we're adults; these memories have to be turned into something that we're grateful for and cherish. So for the last time, I just want to be a child and say just how much the memories kill the most. To me, it's not so much about what our friendship had been that made me sad; it's the damn things we've done together.
Of all the things that made me cry, it was my clothes in the closet and remembering which he gave compliments on. But it's so typical D - he always has nice things to say about other people, and yes, he can be a bit of an air-head sometimes, but he is nothing but genuine. That's probably one thing about him that I'll miss the most.
And then it was the music. Beyonce's "Single Ladies" will never sound the same again, because when I listen to it, all I can think about is D's spot-on booty-jiggling dances. There's also Mika, whom he was always gushing about; then Kylie ("I love the way she's so flirtatious and girly on stage!"); and then even L'arc en Ciel. I'd love to hate him for making me feel sad about good music, but I can't.
Then there's deleting his number from my phone, because that won't ever be of use again. Even if he does visit here in the future, he'll probably have to get a new number. I may sound deranged for saying this, but do you understand what it means? That number has been in my phone for the past 5 years. The past 5 years of "How are yaa?", "Shaaaaaa, would you like to go to lunch at Dessert House?", "Oh my God, I love Aggy, she's so hot!" and don't forget the "I'm dying to catch up with you, it's been ages!"
So here's to you, D. You'll be missed in Melbourne, because this city is just not the same without you. And our day-to-day photos certainly won't be the same without your fierceness.
